INSTRUCTIONS |
 This
page provides all the
instructions for the successful application of Superior RV
Liquid Rubber Roofing. Important: Good adhesion and longevity of this system is largely reliant upon proper surface preparation. To avoid problems, please pay special attention to the following points: 1. Do NOT use silicone as a caulk or sealant. Remove any previously applied silicone. Silicone will prevent adhesion of any roof restoration product. If you must use sealants, we recommend DAP 74810 available from most hardware and big box stores. 2. Do NOT use commercial RV roof cleaners to clean a roof before coating. Use Tide® powdered laundry detergent and warm water only. Pressure wash or scrub with a deck brush. 3. Do NOT assume that a roof is clean because it "looks" clean. Silicone and residue from previous roof treatments, oily residues from vehicle exhaust, and tree saps can be present but invisible and they can ruin your restoration project. 4. Do NOT coat over a roof that has been leaking without first checking to see if there is water trapped in the underlay or ceiling insulation. Once the roof has been coated, trapped water will not be able to escape and can eventually rot the roof members and underlayment, causing catastrophic roof failure. This condition can also cause bubbles to appear in the coating. Open the ceiling from the inside and replace any wet insulation materials prior to coating the roof. If the underlay or structural members have rotted, you must remove the roof membrane, replace the structural members and/or underlay, and follow the instructions for plywood or OSB below. 5. Do NOT use this product on Superflex TPO made by Alpha Systems or DiFlex II membrane made by Dicor. They are thinner and more flexible than conventional TPO and are identified by a tight, textured, orange-peel surface. We are currently working on the development of a coating system for these roof membranes. 6. If you are removing skylights, a/c units, vents, etc., make sure to have an adequate amount of sealant available, such as DAP 74810, to seal the mounting surfaces before re-installing these items. Except for bare plywood surfaces, coverage for Superior RV is typically 42 square feet per gallon for a two coat application. EPDM rubber, PVC, and previously applied coatings require Superior 100 2-Part Epoxy Primer before coating. Coverage for mixed primer is approximately 200 square feet per gallon. When coating surfaces that require primer, less Superior RV is needed. ALUMINUM (BARE, UNCOATED) EPDM RUBBER (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) PVC (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) FIBERGLASS (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) OSB AND PLYWOOD (BARE) ROOF SURFACES PREVIOUSLY COATED WITH ACRYLIC, ELASTOMERIC COATING STEEL (PRE-PAINTED) TPO RUBBER ALUMINUM (BARE, UNCOATED) Surface Preparation: Remove any and all silicone sealant (nothing sticks to silicone). Remove all loose caulking or sealants. Caulking or sealants that are in good condition and adhering well can remain in place. Pressure wash or scrub with a deck brush, the entire roof surface using warm water and Tide® powdered laundry detergent. Do not use liquid dish detergent, solvents or RV roof cleaners. Flush clean with fresh water. Allow to dry completely before applying Superior RV. Remove vent covers (eg. Maxair® or similar). If you are concerned about getting coating on the side of the vehicle, we suggest attaching plastic vapor barrier as an apron around the edge of the roof using masking tape. For clean-up, you may want to purchase a quart of Xylene®. Xylene® and plastic vapor barrier are available from Ace, Lowes or Home Depot. RV Application: Caution: Apply in a well-ventilated area. Do not use indoors unless in a paint booth with approved ventilation. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Uncured product is a flammable liquid. Keep product at room temperature for ease of application. Stir Superior RV for about one minute. Using a brush, apply a heavy coat Superior RV around all objects protruding through the roof, by forcing the coating into all seams around vents and air conditioners, as well as all perimeter seams. Allow to cure until dry to the touch, at least 24 hours. Apply one or two heavy coats over the entire roof by pouring and spreading Superior RV with a long nap roller. Do not press too hard. Allow the coating to flow out on its own and self-level. Do not keep back rolling as the Superior RV will become too thin. Remember, this is a synthetic rubber, NOT a paint. Allow to dry at least 24 hours before taking the vehicle on the road. Freight Trailer, Cargo Trailer, Horse Trailer Application: Stir Superior RV for about one minute. Roller & Brush Application: Using a brush, apply a heavy coat of Superior RV by forcing the coating into any cross seams, seams around roof protrusions, as well as all perimeter seams. Make sure to coat all rivets if they are present. Allow to cure until dry to the touch. Apply one or two heavy coats over the entire roof by pouring and spreading Superior RV with a long nap roller. Do not press too hard. Allow the coating to flow out on its own and self-level. Do not keep back rolling as the Superior RV will become too thin. Remember, this is NOT a paint. Allow to dry at least 24 hours before taking the vehicle on the road. High Pressure Airless Application: Use a high pressure airless sprayer capable of a minimum of 2 gpm output at 3000 psi (Graco Gmax 7900 or similar). Spray two heavy coats at 21 square feet per gallon minimum and allow 24 hours cure time before taking the vehicle on the road. EPDM RUBBER (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) Make sure your roof is actually EPDM rubber and not TPO rubber as EPDM requires a primer and TPO does not. To determine which one you have, go inside the RV and unscrew the trim (garnish) under a ceiling vent and carefully remove it. This should expose a bit of the roof membrane as they typically fold it into the vent cavity and staple it to the sides of the hole when they build the trailer. Remove a staple and look underneath the rubber. If it is black underneath and white on top, it is EPDM. If it white on both sides, it is TPO. Caution: Do not coat over a roof that has been leaking without first checking to see if there is water trapped in the ceiling insulation. Application: Use the Superior 100 primer on EPDM rubber before applying Superior RV®. Superior 100 Flexible Epoxy Primer is heat and moisture sensitive. High temperatures and humidity will accelerate the cure time and pot life. Low temperature and or low humidity will extend the cure time. Recommended surface temperature should be above 50ºF (10ºC) and at least 5ºF above the dew point. Store product at room temperature. If Part “A” is too thick, place can in hot tap water for 30 minutes to reduce thickness. Superior 100 must be top-coated with Superior RV Liquid Rubber Roof Coating between 22 and 30 hours after application. After that, it must be sanded or Superior RV may not adhere. Surface is ready to topcoat when dry to the touch, but slightly tacky to walk on. Primer Mixing: Pick a day when there is no chance of rain. Apply primer after 11:00 AM so it will be cured enough by 10 AM the following day (or after dew has evaporated) before applying topcoat. Do not mix more material that you can use in ½ hour. Use two identical disposable containers, such as 1 qt. plastic measuring cups, pour equal amounts Part ”A” by volume in one, and Part “B” by volume in the other. Pour each of these into a working container large enough to accommodate both “A” and “B”. Mix thoroughly for one minute. Caution: Do not measure weighing. Measure by volume only. Primer Application: Pour and spread the primer using either a brush, roller or squeegee, making sure entire surface is covered. One heavy coat is adequate and will self-level to a glossy finish. Do not try to spread the product too thin. Allow to dry 22 to 30 hours or until dry to the touch. Caution: Superior 100 must be top-coated with Superior RV Liquid Rubber Roof Coating between 22 and 30 hours after application or it will have to be sanded to allow proper adhesion of the roof coating. Application (Superior RV): Caution: Apply in a well-ventilated area. Do not use indoors unless in a paint booth with approved ventilation. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Uncured product is a flammable liquid. Keep product at room temperature for ease of application. Stir Superior RV for about one minute. Using a brush, apply a heavy coat Superior RV around all objects protruding through the roof, by forcing the coating into all seams around vents and air conditioners, as well as all perimeter seams. Detail rounded roof edges using a brush instead of a roller. Allow to cure until dry to the touch. Apply one heavy coat over the entire roof using a long nap roller. Do not press too hard. Allow the coating to flow out on its own and self-level. Do not keep back rolling as the Superior RV will become too thin. Remember, this is NOT a paint. Allow to dry at least 24 hours cure time between coats. Make sure Superior RV is dry to the touch before taking the vehicle on the road. PVC (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) Use the same preparation and application instructions as EPDM above. FIBERGLASS (NOT PREVIOUSLY COATED) Surface Preparation: If surface is shiny, sand with 120 grit sandpaper until gloss is removed. Wipe off dust thoroughly. Do NOT use RV rubber roof cleaners as many of these contain protectants that prevent adhesion of coatings. Use Tide® laundry detergent and warm water, scrub or pressure wash roof and remove as much surface dirt as possible. Remove all oily residue, silicone sealant, loose caulking and any coatings that are peeling. Flush with clean water and allow to dry completely. Application: Caution: Apply in a well-ventilated area. Do not use indoors unless in a paint booth with approved ventilation. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Uncured product is a flammable liquid. Keep product at room temperature for ease of application. Using a brush, apply a coat of Superior RV to all seams, depressions and around all objects protruding through roof (vents, skylights, pipes, etc.), and any areas that cannot be reached with roller. Allow to dry at least 3 hours. Pour Superior RV directly onto the roof surface and spread out with a long nap roller. Remember that Superior RV is a coating, not a paint, so it must be applied liberally to form a protective membrane. Wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat. Note: If you are unable to complete the second coat because of time constraints or inclement weather, the second coat can be applied at any time after the first coat has cured. OSB AND PLYWOOD (BARE) Preparation: Make sure wood is moisture free. Clean, dry plywood requires no preparation. As dry plywood is very absorbent, plan on using 20 to 30% more material than you would for regular roof surfaces. OSB (chipboard) usually has a clear temporary waterproof coating on it which must be sanded prior to coating. If you have removed skylights, a/c units, vents, etc. (recommended), make sure to have an adequate amount of sealant available, such as DAP 74810, to seal the mounting surfaces before re-installing these items. Application: Caution: Apply in a well-ventilated area. Do not use indoors unless in a paint booth with approved ventilation. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Uncured product is a flammable liquid. Keep product at room temperature for ease of application. Apply first coat of Superior RV Liquid Roofing and imbed Superior spunlace fabric into the coating over all seams and joints. Pay special attention to coating the perimeter of all objects that protrude through the roof (vents, pipes, a/c units etc.) as these are big potential leak areas. Force coating into joints and crevices with a brush. Make sure fabric is well coated and allow 36 hours for complete cure before adding more coating. Apply a second, heavier coat over entire surface by pouring and spreading with a long nap roller. Do not press too hard. Allow the coating to flow out on its own and self-level. Do not keep back rolling as the Superior RV will become too thin. Remember, this is NOT a paint. Allow to dry at least 24 hours before applying sealant to mounting surfaces when re-installing vents, skylights, a/c units, etc. ROOF SURFACES PREVIOUSLY COATED WITH ACRYLIC, ELASTOMERIC COATING Surface Preparation: Make sure the existing coating is adhering well to the roof and is not peeling or flaking. All peeling, flaking or poorly adhering coatings and caulking MUST be completely removed as they will eventually fail and lift your new coating with them. Caution: Do not coat over a roof that has been leaking without first checking to see if there is water trapped in the ceiling insulation. Once the roof has been coated, trapped water will not be able to escape and can eventually rot the roof members and underlayment, causing catastrophic roof failure. This condition can also cause bubbles to appear in the coating. Open the ceiling from the inside and replace any wet insulation materials prior to coating the roof. STEEL (PRE-PAINTED) Surface Preparation: If paint is lifting or there is evidence of rust bleed-through, sweep blast to remove paint to a sound finish. If paint is sound with no traces of peeling or rust bleed-through, use Tide® laundry detergent and warm water, pressure wash roof and remove as much surface dirt as possible. Remove all oily residue, silicone sealant, loose caulking and any coatings that are peeling. Flush with clean water and allow to dry completely. Application: Caution: Apply in a well-ventilated area. Do not use indoors without approved ventilation. Extinguish all sources of ignition. Uncured product is a flammable liquid. Keep product at room temperature for ease of application. Stir Superior RV for about one minute. TPO RUBBER (FIRESTONE RIGID TYPE) Caution: Do NOT use this product on Superflex TPO made by Alpha Systems or DiFlex II TPO made by Dicor. These are hybrid membranes that are very flexible and are identified by a tight textured, orange-peel surface. We are currently working on the development of a primer for these roof membranes. Make sure your roof is actually TPO rubber and not EPDM rubber as EPDM requires a primer and TPO does not.
